Juniors Haley Olson and Zachary Carlson have been selected as this year’s Royalton High School ExCEL winners.
The ExCEL award, which stands for excellence in community, education and leadership, is a recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, show leadership qualities and are model citizens. Every member school of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is invited to nominate one girl and one boy for the ExCEL Award.
Nominees must be a junior in high school, make satisfactory progress toward graduation requirements, participate in an MSHSL fine arts or athletic activity, hold a leadership position in their school and volunteer in their community.
Olson, daughter of Troy and Gail Olson, has participated in band, choir, Student Council, Knowledge Bowl, yearbook, volleyball, basketball and softball. Olson actively volunteers at her church with mission trips and retreats.
Carlson, son of Dail and Shelly Carlson, has participated in band, Student Council, Knowledge Bowl, yearbook, cross country, track and field. Carlson actively volunteers at his church in the choir and with the Youth Group.
An independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota will select ExCEL Award recipients in January. ExCEL winners will be recognized on KSTC-TV Channel 45 during this year’s winter state tournaments.
