Class AA’s fourth-ranked St. Cloud Cathedral finished on a 7-0 run to knock off Class A’s No. 8 host Upsala 76-71, Jan. 9.
Upsala started the game red-hot from the field, going ahead 30-18 before Cathedral rebounded to tie the game 39-39 at halftime.
The contest remained much more even throughout the second half, with the Crusaders going ahead 72-71 on a three-point shot with just more than two minutes left.
Upsala had a chance to regain the lead, but after possessing the ball for more than a minute, turned the ball over without putting up a shot.
The Crusaders followed with four free throws in the final 21 seconds to ice the game.
Senior Christian Pekarek led Upsala with 33 points on 12-of-30 shooting, including a 5-of-13 mark from beyond the arc.
Junior Jeremy Halverson scored all 12 of his points from three-point range, with senior Dylan Zimmerman and junior Aidan Guthrie chipping in 10 points apiece.
Upsala managed to bounce back in a big way, Tuesday, tearing apart visiting West Central Area 84-53 in a match-up of the final two unbeaten teams in the Prairie Conference.
Swanville wins two of three
After falling in a low-scoring Prairie Conference struggle at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 49-37, Jan. 9, Swanville rebounded with non-conference wins at Bertha-Hewitt 74-39, Jan. 10 and over visiting Isle 64-62, Monday.
Sophomore Carter Loven netted 11 points and junior Jordan Sales scored 10 versus Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.
Junior Tyler Evans dropped in 20 points and Sales had 19 versus Bertha-Hewitt, followed by senior Aaron Miller (9), sophomore Samuel Mettler (8) and senior Cody Mollner (7).
Loven finished with five points and six assists, while Sales also grabbed 11 rebounds to post a double-double.
Evans once again led Swanville offensively versus Isle, knocking down a trio of three-pointers on his way to a 22-point performance.
Sales (15) and junior Austin Johnson (14) also reached double figures scoring while each passed out four assists.
Cody Mollner added six points and hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds, while Sales grabbed eight boards and made seven steals.
Royalton falls twice
Royalton dropped a pair of Prairie Conference home games, falling 68-29 to Browerville, Jan. 9 and 55-28 to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Monday.
