Prairie Girls Basketball: Upsala nearly blemishes Isle’s perfect record

Upsala just missed out on a big upset at undefeated Isle, Tuesday, falling 64-63 in a match-up of Section 5A opponents.

Junior Brooke Westrich shouldered the majority of the offensive load for the Cardinals, scoring 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting while grabbing seven of her nine rebounds on the offensive end.

Sophomore Kiley Smeija posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, with senior Kaelin Smieja (12) and freshman Katlin Welinski (10) also reaching double figures scoring.

Upsala also fell 62-27 to visiting Osakis, Jan. 10.

 

Fussy puts up big 

numbers for Royals

Senior Emily Fussy had a pair of big games, but injury-plagued Royalton fell twice at home in Prairie Conference play this week against St. John’s Prep 55-26, Jan. 10 and to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 54-47, Tuesday.

Fussy had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds versus St. John’s Prep, with another 26 points, nine rebounds and five steals versus Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.

“Emily has been playing very well for us,” Royalton head coach Ron Makela said. “She does so many things well. She is our leader on offense and defense and is becoming a very complete player.”

 

Short-handed Swanville battles Browerville, Prep

Playing with a short-handed roster, Swanville fell 73-50 at Browerville, Jan. 10 and 52-32 at St. John’s Prep, Monday in Prairie Conference action.

Junior Danica Hanson scored 14 points and junior Steph Koetter posted 13 versus Browerville, with senior Nikki Primus adding seven and sophomore Haileigh Sales picking up six.

The Bulldogs were done in by struggles at the free-throw line, hitting only 6-of-25.

“I felt our girls played a complete game tonight,” Swanville head coach Aaron Gapinski said. “Browerville has a really balanced, aggressive team and I was pleased the way our girls worked hard against them.”

Hanson again led the Bulldogs with 11 points against St. John’s Prep, joined in double figures by freshman Madison Beseman with 10.

Swanville also fell 57-35 at Bertha-Hewitt in non-conference action, Tuesday.
