Prairie Girls Basketball: Ripplinger, Upsala stymie Royalton

While the first meeting of the season wasn’t decided until the final minute, Upsala didn’t have to sweat out its second encounter with visiting Royalton, Jan. 30, earning a 60-35 victory.

Senior Katie Ripplinger led a trio of Cardinals in double figures with 12 points, joined by junior Danica Cheney with 11 and freshman Katlin Welinski with 10.

Junior Brooke Westrich added eight points and juniors Sara Herzog and Mariah Prokott and sophomore Kiley Smieja each had four.

Ripplinger also recorded eight steals and three assists.

Senior Emily Fussy had 15 points and nine rebounds for Royalton, but the Royals had trouble getting much else going, shooting only 26 percent from the field versus 48 percent for Upsala.

Royals fall to Pillager

Upsala was tripped up 61-47 in its next Prairie Conference match-up at West Central Area, Monday.

Welinski netted 12 points and Westrich had 11 for the Cardinals, with Cheney recording seven points and seven rebounds.

Westrich also distributed four assists and made three steals.

Royalton came all the way back from a 12-point deficit to tie the game with four minutes left, but was edged out 52-46 by visiting Pillager, Monday.

Senior Emily Fussy scored 19 of her game-high 22 points in the second half.

Freshman Bridget Tschida grabbed all of her team-high eight rebounds in the second half.


Swanville’s Koetter reaches double figures three times

After a tough 54-24 defeat at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Jan. 30, Swanville kept pace with its next two foes before being edged out down the stretch at West Central Area 52-38, Jan. 31 and at Sebeka 61-50, Monday.

Junior Steph Koetter led the Bulldogs in all three contests, putting up 22 points and seven rebounds versus West Central, a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double against Sebeka and 11 points against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.

Junior Danica Hanson followed with 10 points versus Sebeka and six assists against West Central and senior Nikki Primus had eight points and nine rebounds against Sebeka and grabbed 11 rebounds against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.

Sophomore Haileigh Sales added four points and seven assists versus Sebeka.
