Prairie Girls Basketball: Swanville nearly doubles up Onamia in playoff opener

Eighth-seeded Swanville took apart visiting ninth-seeded Onamia 50-27 in the first round of the Sub-Section 5A North playoffs, Monday.

With the win, the Bulldogs advanced to the sub-section quarterfinals.


Upsala wins two of three heading into playoffs

Upsala won two of its final three games to finish off the regular season, winning 65-59 at St. John’s Prep, Feb. 27 and 66-63 at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Feb. 28 before dropping a tight 56-52 game at Parkers Prairie, Monday.

Senior Kaelin Smieja and junior Brooke Westrich each scored 15 points to lead a balanced effort against St. John’s Prep, followed by freshman Katlin Welinski (9), junior Sara Herzog (8), sophomore Kiley Smieja (7) and senior Katie Ripplinger (6).

The Cardinals racked up a 40-25 halftime lead against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, then held on in the second half for the win.

Kiley Smieja scored 15 points, Herzog had 14 and Kaelin Smieja picked up 13 in the contest.

Parkers Prairie utilized a 28-9 disparity in free-throw attempts to overcome Upsala, withstanding a 15-point effort from Kaelin Smieja.

Welinski followed with eight points while Ripplinger, junior Danica Cheney and Kiley Smieja each put in six.

Ripplinger added five assists.


Royalton falls in final two regular season contests

Royalton fell 44-34 at Holdingford, Feb. 27 and 73-40 at Browerville, Monday in its final two regular season games.

Senior Emily Fussy scored 15 points and sophomore Beth Cimenski had seven for the Royals versus Holdingford.
