Melvin A. Smith, 85, of rural Motley, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Lakewood Health System Care Center in Staples. Graveside services for Melvin will be held at Motley Public Cemetery at a later date.
Melvin was born May 24, 1928, in Staples, to Albert and Helen (Mudick) Smith. He entered the Merchant Marines and then the US Army. Following his honorable discharge, Melvin was united in marriage to Lillian Dukowitz, Aug. 26, 1950, in Staples. Melvin worked for Northern Pacific Railroad for 15 years, then Federal Cartridge in Anoka for 20 years and then he retired to rural Motley where he has been a resident until his death. He enjoyed traveling, tractors, hunting and guns, but especially wanted to be remembered as a successful husband, father and family man.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Lillian; children, LeRoy (Cyndee) Smith of Schroeder, Dan (Terri) Smith of Motley and Rodney Smith of Motley; 10 grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren.
His parents and one sister, Marvel, precede him in death.
