It wasn’t outside, but it was a real game.
And for Pierz, it was a win, as the Pioneers defeated Albany 10-7 in Monday’s season opener held indoors at St. Cloud State University.
Pierz seized control early on, plating six runs in the second inning, then three more in the fourth and another in the top of the fifth.
Needing to score just to keep the game going, Albany picked up two runs in the bottom of the fifth, then made things slightly interesting with another run in the sixth and four in the seventh before Pierz closed out the win.
Senior Tiara Hopkins earned the win, striking out five over 5 2/3 innings pitched before junior Talyre Boser recorded the final four outs.
Offensively, seniors Lea Uzalac and Lynn Funk and junior Shelbie Boser each had three hits and combined to score six runs.
Two of Uzalac’s three went for extra bases, as she smacked a double and a triple.
