The Swanville School Board held its regular meeting on March 18th, 2014 in the High School Library. Board Members present were Jay Loven, Rick Gutormson, Kathy Beckman, Todd Jackson, Jeff Opelia, and Chris Kircher. Administrator Harthan and members of the 9th grade Civics Class.
Chair Jay Loven called the meeting to order at 8:01 p.m.
Motion made by Beckman and seconded by Gutormson to approve the agenda for this meeting. Motion carried.
Motion made by Opelia and seconded by Jackson to approve the minutes of February 11th board meeting. Motion carried.
ALC report:
52 students from 7 districts are being served.
Budget expenditures are at 59% YTD.

7-12 Principals Report:
Congratulations to Cole Pfeiffer and Adam Bartkowitz, February Students of the Month!
Congratulations to Cody Mollner and Nikki Primus, the January Athletes of the Month!
Worked on the Teacher Evaluation, pieces in place for March 21 in-service. Also attended The Worlds Best Workforce planning workshop, much work to be done, especially on goal setting.
End of 3rd quarter is Friday, March 21.
Yearbook is almost complete, first year in a long time having spring delivery. Planning a signing party, trying to increase sales.
Band competed today in large group contest in Melrose.
Testing will be starting next week.
Even though we are making some cuts, we were able to maintain same number of electives minus one for next year and possibly will be shifting some core classes to run together.
Olweus seems to be running smoothly.
We had a presentation today from Todd County Sheriffs Office on sexting and cyber bullying.
We will be having someone from the Rural MN CEP working with our staff and students 2 times a month for four hours a day on career advising through a grant we applied for. This will help with the college and career piece of the MN Workforce plan.
Dollars for Scholars presented to seniors on how to fill out the application form online.
Spring practices for sports and the play have started.
Elementary Principals Report:
1. Congratulations to the Spelling Bee Winner Kennedy Allen. Runners-up were Mason Graves, Derek Hanson, and Rebekah Muhlenkamp. Kennedy competed in the Regional Spelling Bee in Brainerd on March 7.
2. Kindergarten Round-up is March 12.
3. Read Across America Night is March 17.
4. Elementary Knowledge Bowl will be starting March 17.
5. Grades 4-6 are selling candy bars to help pay for their trip to Deep Portage which is April 23 25.
6. There is an early dismissal on Friday March 21 for staff in-service. Students will be dismissed at noon. This is also the last day of the 3rd quarter. Staff will be looking at teacher evaluation models.
7. Marie Francis will be teaching a clay/pottery unit to the elementary classes.
Old Business:
Tom Beseman discussed with the board about starting a sports booster club in the community, he also informed the board that the fundraising for the new basketball chairs is going well.
Motion made by Kircher and seconded by Beckman to accept the resignation of English Teacher Kathy Detloff at the end of the 2013 -2014 school year and THANK HER for her 41 years of service to our district!!! Motion carried.
Motion made by Opelia seconded by Gutromson to approve Kathy Detloff to direct the 2014 fall play. Motion carried.
Motion made by Opelia and seconded by Gutormson to propose to place Gary Bahe on Unrequested Leave of Absence. Motion carried.
Motion made by Beckman and seconded by Jackson to propose to place Pam Czech on Unrequested Leave of Absence. Motion carried.
Motion made by Loven and seconded by Kircher to propose to place Sharon Pesta on Unrequested Leave of Absence. Motion carried.
Motion made by Gutormson and seconded by Opelia to propose to place Adam Gerads on Unrequested Leave of Absence. Motion carried.
Motion made by Beckman and seconded by Jackson to propose to place Gina Christopherson on Unrequested Leave of Absence. Motion carried.
Motion made by Kircher and seconded by Gutormson to propose to place Char Bzdok on Unrequested Leave of Absence. Motion carried.
Motion made by Opelia and seconded by Beckman to propose to place Shelly Peterson on Unrequested Leave of Absence. Motion carried.
Administrator Harthan discussed student issues on the buses and may have to look into the possibility of installing video cameras.
New Business:
Motion made by Kircher and seconded by Gutormson to approve the school calendar for the 2014 2015 school year. Motion carried .
The board was informed of a $2,500 grant that was received from Toyota Drive for Education.
Motion made by Jackson and seconded by Gutormson to pay the bills in the amount of $115,585.11. Motion carried. Check numbers 72543 – 72626 and manual Check numbers 62873 – 62877.
Motion made by Kircher and seconded by Opelia to approve electronic transfers of $20,060.33 on February 20th, 2014 and $20,886.54 on March 5th, 2014. Motion carried.
Motion made by Loven and seconded by Beckman to adjourn the meeting at 8:57 pm. Motion carried.
