Tuesday baseball playoff recaps

Section 6AA

East-#2 Little Falls 4, East-#7 Milaca 0

Senior Kyle Boser spun a two-hit, 13-strikeout gem as Little Falls shut out visiting Milaca 4-0.

The game was scoreless into the bottom of the third, when the Flyers broke through with a pair without the aid of a hit, scoring when senior Alec Zack was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and on a sacrifice fly by junior Bryce Zawatzke.

The score held at 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when Boser provided some breathing room for the final frame with a two-out, two-run single.

Milaca had its best scoring opportunity in the first, when its leadoff man was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout.

With two outs, a throw behind the runner on a pickoff attempt nearly sailed into left field, but senior third baseman Brett Strack knocked it down to hold the runner at bay, then Boser picked up a strikeout to end the threat.

It was the fourth year in a row Little Falls has defeated Milaca in the first round of the playoffs.

East-#6 Pierz 2, East-#3 Foley 1

For the second year in a row, Pierz went into Foley and knocked off the Falcons in the first round of the playoffs, riding a five-hitter by junior Cody Meyer to a 2-1 victory.

Pierz only picked up two hits, but made them count.

The Pioneers tallied the first run of the game in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by senior Mac Gruber to bring in Meyer.

Foley tied it with its only run in the fourth, with the game remaining knotted at 1-1 through five innings.

Pierz then scored the game-winner in the sixth, as senior Evan Woitalla crossed on a balk call.

East-#5 Holdingford 8, East-#4 Albany 5

It appeared Holdingford’s season might be about over.

Instead, it will go on for at least two more games, as the Huskers, down to their final out in the seventh inning, came up with a dramatic four-run rally to stun host Albany 8-5.

Sub-Section 5A West

#5 Upsala-Swanville Area 3, #1 Browerville 2 (9 inn.)

Browerville hung a pair of gut-wrenching losses on Upsala-Swanville Area during the regular season.

The Patriots more than got the Tigers back, advancing to the sub-section finals with a 3-2, nine-inning win in Cold Spring.

The score was tied at 1-1 through eight innings when junior Kyle Soltis crushed an RBI double to left-center to bring home junior Tyler Evans, then scored himself on an RBI double by junior Austin Johnson.

Browerville staged a comeback threat in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run and getting the tying man aboard, but senior starting pitcher Eric Lampert slammed the door to finish off the complete-game win.

Sophomore Justin Cichon went 3-for-5 and sophomore Chase Douvier and Johnson each had two hits.

#7 Royalton 2, #6 Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 1

Sophomore Parker Brezinka tossed a three-hitter to propel Royalton over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 2-1 and into the sub-section finals in Cold Spring.

Senior Cade Stang doubled and juniors Brady Moulzolf and Jordon Smieja also had hits for the Royals.
