Swanville High School has announced its May Athletes of the Month as Jackie Panek for softball, Austin Johnson for baseball, Stephanie Koetter for girls’ track and Sam Mettler for boys’ track. Tyler Evans is the April Athlete of the Month for baseball.
“Jackie has emerged as a strong leader on the softball team this year. She doesn’t hesitate when something needs to be done, and is always looking to help out anyway she can,” said coach Tom Bzdok. “Jackie has done most of the pitching this year and accepts the challenge and responsibility that goes with it. She has put a lot of work into improving her game and has improved greatly from last year.”
“Tyler was one of the few returning players with varsity experience this year. He was one of the kids the team needed to look to as a leader,” said coach Adam Gerads. “He has done just that, he has not only been one of our best players but one of our team leaders. Tyler has been a utility player for us and has played five different positions so far.” For the month of April, Evans’ batting average was .312.
“Austin came back out this year after not playing last year. Austin has been a big part of the team. He is a vocal leader and is always giving 110 percent effort,” said coach Gerads. “Austin has made great strides since moving to centerfield and has become a very reliable pitcher for us.”
In track, Koetter, a junior, is a high jumper. “She was injured throughout April, but was able to jump in May, never finishing below third in a meet. She advance to the section 6A meet in the high jump with a jump of 4-feet, 10-inches and has jumped as high as five-feet this year,” said coach Pete Swisher.
Mettler, a sophomore is what Swisher described as “a jack of all trades.”
“He has competed in the high jump, triple jump, discus, 400, 800, 1600, 4X800 relay, and 4X400 relay throughout the season,” Swisher said. Mettler advanced to the section 6A track meet in the 800 with a time of 2:15.
