Matthias Algarin qualifies for national track meet

Pierz’ Matthias Algarin took first place in the long jump at a recent track and field regional, and will now compete at the Amateur Athletic Union National Track and Field Junior Olympic Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, July 26 - Aug. 2.

Pierz’ Matthias Algarin took first place in the long jump at a recent track and field regional, and will now compete at the Amateur Athletic Union National Track and Field Junior Olympic Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, July 26 – Aug. 2.

Pierz 12-year-old Matthias Algarin qualified for the Amateur Athletic Union  National Track and Field Junior Olympic Championships after progressing through the state and regional levels.

The national meet will be held at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, July 26 – Aug. 2, where Algarin will compete against the top eight qualifiers from each of the other 23 national regions.

At the state level, Algarin swept through the 100-meter dash, long jump and triple jump and was a narrow second in the 200, setting a state record in the triple jump.

At the regional level, competing against winners from Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota, Algarin took first in the long jump (16-feet, 9.25-inches), second in the triple jump (33-feet, 7.5-inches), sixth in the 100 (12.82) and seventh in the 200 (26.24).
