School starts Tuesday, Sept. 2, in Little Falls

In the past, Little Falls Elementary Schools offered an open house for its elementary students on the Tuesday after Labor Day.

On that same day, the sixth and ninth grade students had their orientation at the Little Falls Community Middle School and the Community High School.

No other students started school that day, giving the new students to each school the opportunity to get their bearings without the hustle and bustle of a normal school day.

As of the beginning of the 2014-15 school year, kindergarten – fifth grade students in the elementary schools will attend school all day Sept. 2. Each student, and their parents, will have the opportunity to become acclimated to their respective schools, meet their teachers, etc., during open houses scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

The same schedule will be held for the sixth- and ninth-grade students. All grades in both the middle school and the high school will begin the school year Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Schedule is:

September 2
  • All Elementary students grades K-5
  • 6th-graders to the Middle School
  • 9th-graders to the High School
September 3
  • All students in the district grades K-12

“A lot of what we took care of during registration in the past was done during registration week, which was held Aug. 11 – 14,” said Supt. Stephen Jones. “The health forms were filled out, community education classes registered for, iPads were handed out and bus schedules learned. Applications for free and reduced lunches were filled out, activities were signed up for, Skylert notifications were set up and food service payments were also accepted during registration week.   Everything  was done at the high school commons area, and all the paperwork finished in one location. This minimized the need for the open house.”

Jones said by starting early in the process, the elementary students will be ready to go. They will have all the necessary information two weeks early.

“That’s huge,” Jones said. “Plus, we will have most of the student count in when school starts, instead of waiting for the first day.”

He said it will also give the teachers an additional contact day with the students.
