The sixth annual Pierz Sue Fischer Scholarship Endowment Fund golf tournament will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Pierz Golf Course.
A scholarship fund has been established in conjunction with the Mercy and Unity Hospitals Foundation in the name of Sue (Thoma) Fischer. She grew up in Little Falls and married Jerome Fischer from the Pierz area. She was a nurse at Mercy and Unity Hospital in the cath lab and ICU for more than 37 years, until her life was tragically taken Sept. 19, 2004.
Because continuing education was so important to Sue, her family, friends and co-workers have established this fund as a means of honoring her memory and her years of dedicated service to patients and to the nursing profession. All profits go to the Sue Fischer Scholarship Endowment Fund. The scholarships are for nursing students in the state of Minnesota going back to school to continue their education.
Applications can be picked up at schools with an accredited nursing program or Mercy Hospital in Anoka.
This will be the last year of fundraising, but the scholarships are set up to be given forever. Over the past 10 years, one – $500, 23 – $1,000, seven – $1,500, two – $2,000 and a $3,000 scholarship have been awarded.
Since 2005, 34 scholarships have been awarded, totaling $41,000.
The day of the tourney, check-in begins at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. The fee for the 18 holes of golf includes a buffet dinner at the Brickyard Bar and Grill in Pierz. People can come for the buffet dinner alone if they choose.
The five previous tournaments have been held at Majestic Oaks in Ham Lake.
Golfers are asked to register by Sept. 10. For more information, contact Eileen Pohlkamp, (320) 360-2434, or by mail: 27114 153rd St., Pierz, MN 56364.
