Holdingford definitely had to work for it, but they eventually knocked off a stingy Pierz team 3-2 on Sept. 11.
The two CMC rivals traded blows early on as the Huskers won game one 25-18, but the Pioneers bounced back with a 25-22 game two victory.
Holdingford regained the upper hand with a 25-16 game three victory, only to fall back to even when Pierz won game four 25-21.
However, it was Holdingford that captured the victory in the decisive fifth set 15-12.
Summer Storm, Emily Ruprecht and Kaitlyn Hellman each had 11 kills for the Huskers in the win.
Both teams followed up their matches with a trip to Sauk Rapids for a tournament Saturday, Sept. 13.
The Huskers had one victory in four tries as they beat Little Fork-Big Falls 2-1.
They fell 1-2 to Dassel-Cokato, 1-2 to Kimball and 0-2 to St. Cloud Cathedral to close out the tournament.
They are 4-6 overall and 2-0 in CMC play.
Pierz had the exact same fate in the Sauk Rapids tourney as they too picked up only one win, which was a 2-1 win over LFBF.
Leah Fuhrman had six aces in the win.
The Pioneers fell 0-2 to Foley, 0-2 to Mora and 0-2 to Rocori, all big schools in the tournament as well.
Raychel Virnig had six kills in the loss to Mora, and five digs.
Pierz closed out their busy week last Tuesday with a 1-3 loss to a tough Foley team.
The Falcons topped the Pioneers 25-17, 25-17 and 25-19 to earn the win.
Pierz did earn a 25-21 victory in the second set, but that was all they could muster in the tough loss.
Virnig had eight kills and 14 digs. Jessica Hawks added 22 set-assists, while Cassie Smieja and Claire Reardon had 14 digs a piece.
The Pioneers have a 1-9, 0-2 in CMC record.
