With playoff spots and seeds on the line, the Victory League amateur baseball action Saturday, July 9, was as exciting as billed.
This was most evident in Pierz, where the Royalton River Dogs punched their ticket to the postseason by upending the Pierz Bulldogs 5-4 in 11 innings.
Royalton’s winning run was scored by Michael Petron who scored on an errant throw as he tried to go from first to third on a single in the 11th inning.
Hunter Young kept the River Dogs in the contest with 5 2/3 solid innings of scoreless relief, allowing only one hit.
Aaron Schultz started and went 10 innings for the Bulldogs, allowing six hits and four runs, while striking out six.
Royalton (3-10) will be the No. 4 seed out of the East division.
The Bulldogs conclude the year at 1-12.

Randall wins to push Skis
to top seed in West
Randall topped Upsala 3-1 in a 12-inning thriller Saturday, July 9, to drop the Jays into a No. 2 seed in the West Division playoffs.
The Cubs’ Dusty Parker scored the winning run after advancing to home on an errant throw to first base.
Brett Strack pitched five strong innings of relief to earn the win for Randall.
Matt Swanson had a strong day in the loss for Upsala with two hits, an RBI and seven strong innings on the mound. He allowed only three hits and one run.
Sobieski became the No. 1 seed after the loss, regardless of how they did against Lastrup, Saturday.
However, the Skis were able to take care of business over the East’s No. 1 squad, 4-3.
Colin Eckman, who hit a solo shot earlier in the contest, drew a bases-loaded walk to score Beau Hanowski for the winning run in the ninth inning.
Tyler Jendro tossed six strong innings, allowing six hits and two runs for Sobieski.
Paul Herman was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in the loss for the Lakers.
Both teams finished the regular season at 11-2 and atop their respective divisions.

St. Mathias season ends
The St. Mathias Devils’ season ended Sunday, July 10, with a 16-14 loss to Cuyuna.
The play-in game to determine the No. 4 seed in the North Division looked from earlier on to belong to the Miners, who led 16-7 at one point.
However, St. Mathias battled back, scoring seven runs in the final few innings, but came up two short.
Josh Boser had three hits for the Devils and David Skiba scored twice in the loss.

Falcons, Billygoats earn shutouts in different ways
Both Buckman and Flensburg earned shutout victories Saturday, July 9, but it couldn’t have been in more different ways.
The Billygoats won 9-0 thanks to a forfeit by the Pierz Brewers who did not have enough players.
Flensburg on the other hand used the Jenks brothers to handle Opole, 10-0 in seven innings.
Justin Jenks pitched all seven innings, striking out nine and allowing only three hits.
Offensively he was also strong, going 4-for-4 with two doubles.
Brother AJ Jenks hit a home run in the victory as well.
The win cemented the Falcons as the No. 3 seed in the West Division at 5-8.
