Vietnam War hero receives medals after more than 40 years

It was an emotional moment for family, friends and fellow veterans to see Staff Sgt. James Lee Anderson finally receive the medals due him for his heroic and selfless conduct during the Vietnam War. Pictured are Anderson’s nephew, Washington VFW Post 9430 Commander Chad Hassebroek, left, and Staff Sgt. James Lee Anderson.

Last year, when Chad Hassebroek, post commander of VFW Post 9430 in Seattle, Wash., found out that his uncle, Staff Sgt. James Lee Anderson of Pierz never received his medals for heroic and selfless conduct in the Vietnam War, Hassebroek wanted to make it happen.

“I don’t know why he didn’t get his medals. He should have gotten them long ago,” Hassebroek said.
