Here is a look at the area’s involvement in the State Wrestling Tournament, which runs Thursday through Saturday.
At 11 a.m., Thursday, Class A team action begins as No. 2 Pierz will wrestle Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sundberg in the quarterfinals. If the Pioneers keep winning, they’d play in semifinals at 3 p.m. and the finals at 7 p.m.
Individual action begins Friday and there are 17 area individuals wrestling, two in Class AAA for Little Falls, and 15 in the Class A competition for Pierz, Royalton-Upsala and Holdingford.
For the Flyers senior Lane Rutten (138) and junior AJ Jenks (182) will wrestle.
Nine Pierz wrestlers advanced to Class A state at the Section 7A Tournament. Four Pioneer seniors won section titles: Brandon Ortman (132), Andrew Tomala (145), Brett Kapsner (182) and Matt Kummet (195). Five Pioneers were runners-up: Freshman Brandon Funk (106), sophomore Jake Andres (120), sophomore Reese Kapsner (138), junior Jalen Jansen (152) and sophomore Carson Huls (220).
Royalton-Upsala and Holdingford each had three state qualifiers. For the Royals sophomore Jackson Held (132), senior Michael Petron (138) and Jason Kasella (195). Kasella was a section champion. For the Huskers, senior Nolan Prokott (182), Tony Kierstead (220) and Walker Nienaber (285) all moved on. Nienaber won a section title.
Upsala was beaten 70-57 by Mayer Lutheran in non-conference boys basketball action last night.
Area girls basketball playoff action begins with a sub-section quarterfinal for Little Falls tonight. The No. 8 Flyers travel to play top-seeded Alexandria. The rest of the girls teams open sub-sections Thursday. in Section 5A south Swanville hosts Upsala. Holdingford hosts Melrose and Royalton travels to No. 3 Albany in the Section 6AA West playoffs. Pierz travels to Pine City in Section 6AA East.
