Nine Pioneers move on to state

Nine Pierz wrestlers moved on to state, including four seniors who earned Section 7A titles, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25.

Brandon Ortman, 132 pounds, was one of the four senior section champions. He beat his opponent 8-6 in the title match.

Andrew Tomala was the second victor, winning 8-5 in the championship at 145 pounds.

Brett Kapsner pinned his opponent at 1:42 of the match to win the title at 182 pounds.

Lastly, Matt Kummet won 4-1 in the 195-pound championship.

Five other Pioneers earned runner-up finishes and advanced to Class A state.

Freshman Brandon Funk took second place with a win by rule in the true second place match. He fell 11-2 in the title match.

Sophomore Jake Andres was a runner-up at 120 pounds, falling 7-3 in the title match. He won second by rule.

Sophomore Reese Kapsner was beaten 2-1 in the section title game. He won 9-2 in the second place match.

Junior Jalen Jansen was the second place finisher at 152 pounds. Jansen was bested 6-1 in the title match, but won 17-5 in the second place match.

Lastly, sophomore Carson Huls won 5-2 in both the third place match and the true second place match to move on to state.

Three other Pierz wrestlers earned third place finishes, falling just short of advancing to state.

Austin Radunz was pinned his opponent in the third place match.

Senior Logan Lease was third by pinning his opponent. He then lost by rule in the second place match.

Lastly, senior Troy Fischer won via fall in the third place match, but fell by rule in the second place match.
