Pierz, Huskers prepare for season finale

Pierz and Holdingford concluded the regular season against each other, Friday.

Results were not avaialble from the matchup by press time, but entering the game, the Huskers had won six straight, while the Pioneers had lost six of their last seven.

Holdingford’s last three wins came 55-45 over Osakis, Feb. 23, 69-64 over Eden Valley-Watkins (EVW), Feb. 24 and 62-36 over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (BBE), Tuesday.

The Huskers 21-4 earned the No. 3 seed in the Section 6AA West Tournament, and will host No. 6 St. John’s Prep, Thursday.

Pierz lost its last two games, beginning with a tough 52-48 loss against BBE, Feb. 23.

Pierz led 26-18 at halftime, but allowed a strong run by the Jaguars in the second half.

Senior Matt Tautges played strong, netting 18 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and dished out six assists.

Freshman Peter Schommer scored 11 for the Pioneers.

Pierz was then bested 85-44 against EVW, Tuesday.

Tautges again was the leader for Pierz with 25 points and nine rebounds.

The Pioneers will be the No. 8 seed and will travel to play top-seeded Cathedral in the Section 6AA East quarterfinals, Thursday.
