Sports Roundup March 2: Pioneers wrestlers fall in title, girls basketball playoffs begin

The Pierz Wrestling team advanced to the Class A State team Championship, but were bested 35-16 in the title match by Zumbrota-Mazeppa. The Pioneers won their quarterfinal match over Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sundberg, 44-15. Pierz exacted revenge over the only team that had beaten them in the regular season, West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville, 35-21.

Sub section action for girls basketball in Class A and AA began last night with quarterfinals for five area teams.

No. 5 Upsala upset No. 4 Swanville last night, 56-37 in the Section 5A South quarters. Royalton was bested by No. 3 Albany, 61-26 in Section 6AA West action. No. 5 Melrose upset Holdingford, 47-31 as well in that section. In Section 6AA East, Pierz fell 65-56 to Pine City.

Finally, in boys basketball regular season action, Little Falls was bested 71-60 by Zimmerman. Swanville crushed Isle 99-69 in non-conference action.
