Area girls basketball seasons end in playoffs

All three of the area Section 6AA girls basketball teams were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the sub-section, March 2.

The closest a team came was Pierz, who fell 65-56 at No. 3 Pine City.

Senior Becca Athman led the Pioneers in the loss with 15 points. Junior Kelsi Stuckmayer added 14 points including 8-of-11 from the free throw line.

Becky Langer had nine points off the bench for Pierz.

Royalton was also eliminated with a 61-26 loss at No. 3 Albany in Section 6AA West quarterfinals.

Lastly, Holdingford was bested by No. 5 Melrose, 47-31. The game was 19-18 in Melrose’s favor at halftime, but a second half run pushed them past the Huskers.

Senior Johanna Merten led Holdingford with 12 points. Marissa Gerads also had eight points.

The Huskers completed the season with a 12-15 record. They will graduate six seniors, including Merten, their leading scorer.

Royalton’s final record was 14-11. Brooke Tschida was the lone senior for the Royals.

Pierz graduates four seniors. Besides Athman, Taryn Becker, Tori Fleischhacker and Kacy Broschofsky were also seniors.

The Pioneers finished with a 10-17 overall record.
