Claus Miedema, Jr., 83-year-old resident of Albertville, formerly of Pierz, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, at Grace Covenant Church in Little Falls, with the Rev. Greg Satterberg officiating. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. on Saturday at Grace Covenant Church in Little Falls.
Claus was born Feb. 4, 1934, in Broadland, S.D., to the late Claus and Rachel (Hollman) Miedema. Graduated high school in Huron, S.D. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1957. He was united in marriage to Patricia McGillivray on Feb. 14, 1958, in Broadland, S.D. Claus was an educator his entire life, he truly loved and had a deep passion for kids and their education. He started his teaching career as a math and shop teacher. He later received his master’s degree and served as a principal for much of his career, the last 27 years being in Pierz at Healy High School. Claus was very involved in the Pierz Community as well as the extracurricular activities at the high school. After he retired from Pierz Healy High he enjoyed playing cards, camping, woodworking, coin collecting, playing bingo, and going to garage sales. Claus also enjoyed reading and always made sure he had a new book to read to his grandchildren when they visited. Since retiring, Claus and Patricia spent their winters in southern Texas where they met many new friends and enjoyed themselves in the warm Texas climate. He was a member of Grace Covenant Church in Little Falls and the Pierz Lions Club. Claus will forever be remembered by his family as a very caring and compassionate person with a very large heart. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
Claus is survived by wife of 59 years, Patricia Miedema of Albertville; sons, Mark (Peggy) Miedema of Little Falls, Dennis (Christine) Miedema of Albertville, Rodney (Theresa) Miedema of Savage and Scott (Greg Bessmer) McGillivray of Palm Springs, Calif.; daughter, Natalie (Michael) Holmgren of Swanville; brothers, Ed (Marella) Miedema of Rapid City, S.D. and Stephen (Bev) Miedema of Springfield, S.D.; sisters, Nellie Ann Karnof of North Manchester, Ind. and Lillian (Jim) Bush of Huron, S.D.; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Claus was preceded in death by parents, Claus and Rachel Miedema; infant son, Daryl Miedema; and brothers, Robert, William, James and Clarence Miedema.
