It was a pretty quick finish for the area’s Section 6AA boys basketball teams in the playoffs.
Both Royalton and Pierz were bested in their first games, while Holdingford lost in the Section 6AA West semifinals.
The No. 7 Royals fell 34-65 to No. 2 Sauk Centre in the Section 6AA West quarterfinals, March 9.
The Streeters went up 30-15 on the Royals at halftime.
Both teams scored more in the second half, but it was Sauk Centre that earned the victory and moved on.
Sophomore Zach Gottwalt led Royalton with 12 points. Junior Adam Olson added eight points.
Royalton concluded the season with a 9-16 overall record.
The Royals had three seniors, Jeremiah Nichols, Thomas Fountain and Colton Murphy.
Sauk Centre also knocked out the Huskers in the semifinals, Saturday, March 11, by a score of 70-50.
The Huskers had advanced to the semifinals with a 73-50 victory over St. John’s Prep, March 9.
Holdingford graduates six seniors: Blake Patrick, Dalton Frink, Jon Ethen, Caeleb Johnson, Matt Catlin and Joe Meier.
Lastly, the Pierz boys basketball team was dispatched by St. Cloud Cathedral, 102-35, March 9, in the Section 6AA East quarterfinals.
Pierz actually trailed by only two, 20-18, early in the first half. However, Cathedral then sprung to a lead, and went up 68-30 by halftime.
Senior Matt Tautges was the only Pioneer in double digits with 11 points.
Preston Rocheleau and Peter Schommer each scored eight points.
Pierz (3-24) graduates five seniors, including: Tautges, Lukas Otte, Thomas Funk, Chris Marshik and Fred Linehan.
