Not every game on the schedule was played, but several Victory League teams braved the cold, wind and rain to hit the diamond, Saturday and Sunday, April 29-30.
Saturday, the Pierz Brewers snapped a 16-game losing streak dating back to 2010 by beating the Lastrup Lakers, 5-4.
Lastrup led 4-1, but the Brewers tied the game in the seventh and Logan Meyer hit a game-winning sac fly in the eighth inning to give the Brewers the lead.
Mike Poser pitched 2 2/3 of no-hit relief to close out the final innings for the Brewers
Meyer finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Greg Pohlkamp scored twice.
The Lakers’ offense was led by Brad Meyer, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Randall dropped its second game of the season, Saturday, April 29, with a 4-2 loss at St. Stephen.
Alec Zack did his part for the Cubs, going 3-for-4 with a run. Dusty Parker reached base three times and drove in a run in the loss for Randall.
The games continued to be intense in Sunday’s Victory League action.
Upsala moved to 2-0 after holding on for a 10-6 victory over always strong Avon.
The Blue Jays opened up the game in the fifth with a five-run inning, and led 9-3 headed into the bottom of the ninth.
Avon attempted to come back with three consecutive RBI singles with two outs, but newly acquired Paul Krebs came in to get the final out.
Brandon Welinski led the Jays’ bats with three RBI. Brady Burggraff scored three times and drove in two more for Upsala.
The Royalton Riverdogs are also undefeated after they toppled Cuyuna, 3-1, in both teams’ season opener.
Matt Gottwalt was strong on the mound, pitching a complete game two-hitter with six strikeouts.
Cole Jendro drove in two runs, and Adam Snyder scored twice to lead the Riverdogs.
Ft. Ripley earned a crucial 11-7 victory over division rival Nisswa, Sunday, April 30, to open both teams’ seasons.
The Rebels scored five runs in the first to jump out to an early lead.
Brett Kramer went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI to help boost the Ft. Ripley offense. Jason Sather added three RBIs.
Opole took down Randall, Sunday, April 30, to drop the Cubs to 0-3.
Kyle Peterschick and Brett Strack went 3-for-4 to try and help the Cubs. Peterschick had three RBIs.
Lastly, St. Mathias was bested 13-12 by Aitkin.
Nick Lochner had two hits to lead the Devils.
The schedule for Sunday, May 7 looks like this (all games at 1:30 p.m.): St. Mathias at Buckman; Upsala at Opole; Ft. Ripley at Pierz Bulldogs; Randall at Flensburg; Pierz Brewers at Royalton; Swanville at Sobieski and Lastrup at Aitkin.
