Tautges tosses no-hitter as Pioneers remain undefeated

Matt Tautges was near-perfect against Eden Valley-Watkins (EVW), April 28.

The Pierz senior hurler tossed a complete game, no-hitter in a 5-0 Pioneers victory over the Eagles.

He did walk one batter, but struck out six.

Tautges’ success in the win wasn’t only on the mound, however. He went 2-for-4, clubbing a double, scoring a run and stealing two bases.

Fellow senior Matt Kummet scored a run and drove in one for Pierz.

Tautges’ perfect game was game one of a doubleheader with the Eagles.

The Pioneers played another gem in game two, as Pierz beat EVW, 7-0.

Junior Preston Rocheleau surrendered only two hits and striking out seven in six shutout innings.

Offensively, Rocheleau went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Senior Brett Kapsner smacked a double and scored twice.

The 8-0 Pioneers will travel to play at Paynesville, Tuesday.

 

Royalton’s win streak ends

in extra-inning loss

     A five-game win streak came to an end for Royalton with an 8-5 loss at Osakis in eight innings, Tuesday.

The Royals lost despite a 3-for-4 day at the plate by senior Caleb Smieja. Smieja’s big day came with a double, two runs scored, a home run and three RBI.

Ethan Walcheski added a 2-for-3 day at  the dish with a run and an RBI.

The Royals had extended the win streak to five with a 12-1 victory over Browerville/Eagle Valley (BEV), April 28.

In that win, Psyck went for all five innings, scattering three hits and striking out six.

He was also 3-for-3 from the plate, scoring three times and driving in two runs.

Fellow senior Austin Zapzalka drove in four runs, scored another and rapped two hits in the victory.

Smieja and fellow senior Michael Petron each had three hits for Royalton.

Royalton (6-4) will host Foley for a game, Monday.

USA also took on BEV, topping them, 9-4, Tuesday.

The Patriots trailed 4-0, but scored runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh to earn the victory.

A trio of seniors led the USA offensive surge. Myron Ripplinger hit an RBI triple, and scored three times; Troy Evans went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI double and Travis Barthel was 3-for-4 with a run and four RBIs.

USA also fell, 3-4, against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud, April 28.

The 2-3 Patriots will travel to play at Watertown-Mayer, Monday.
