The Swanville Swans nearly stuck with the Freeport Black Sox in non-division Victory League action, Father’s Day, Sunday, June 18.
Heading into the seventh inning, both teams had a single run, looking to be a close finish.
However, Freeport knocked out Swans starter Austin Johnson with a five-run seventh inning. The Sox added five more in the eighth, and finished off the Swans in the top of the ninth to earn an 11-2 win.
Colton Kruzel led the Swanville offense with a double, run scored and an RBI.
The Swans weren’t the only West Division team to travel to Freeport, Sobieski played the Black Sox later in the day after Swanville, beating Freeport 13-3 in seven innings.
Tyler Jendro was cruising on the mound, striking out 11 batters in six innings.
Dan Marod was big at the plate for the Skis, smashing a home run, driving in four runs and scoring three more.
Sobieski also beat division rival Flensburg earlier in the day, 15-0 in seven innings.
Josh Wenzel and Chris Reller combined to allow just three hits and struck out eight for Sobieski.
Wenzel also scored three times and drove in three runs.
Marod was again strong for the Skis. He scored three times and drove in two more runs.
Sam Nagel had a hit for the Falcons in the loss.
The loss was the second of the weekend for Flensburg, who also fell 24-4 to Upsala in seven innings, Saturday, June 17.
It was a slugfest for the Blue Jays who racked up 24 runs on 20 hits to earn their eighth win of the year.
Brandon Welinski smashed three doubles, scoring all three times he got on and driving in three runs.
Brock Cichon, who was also the winning pitcher for Upsala, scored twice and drove in three more.
Nagel hit his very first Victory League home run for Flensburg in the loss.
Upsala won its ninth game of the year with yet another offensive explosion in a 22-0 shutout of Swanville in seven innings, Sunday, June 18.
Again Welinski was a big part, this time hitting a home run, driving in three runs and scoring twice.
John Fuchs had four RBIs for Upsala.
Derek Pfeiffer had one of five Swanville hits in the loss.
Rounding out West Division action was Randall, who was bested 6-2 by Avon, Sunday, June 18.
In the loss, the Cubs received a 3-for-4 day at the plate from Brett Czajkowski. Alec Zack also had two hits.
Victory League East
Division race tightens up
A big 10-0 win over Lastrup in seven innings kept the Pierz Brewers in a tie atop of the Victory League East.
Brian Kiel pitched all seven innings for Pierz in the win Saturday, June 17.
He also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Breck Weber scored twice for the Brewers.
Chad Weiss hit a double, but was taken off the mound in the game by a strong Brewer offense.
The Brewers were beaten earlier in the day, 9-8, by North Division’s Aitkin.
The Brewers trailed the steam 9-5 at one point, but added three runs and had runners on first and third in the bottom of the ninth, but could not bring them home.
Mike Poser threw all nine innings for Pierz, while Eric Boser, Marc Wawrzyniak and Jeremy Payne all drove in two runs.
Lastrup on the other hand finished the Saturday evening with a 13-2 win in seven innings over Royalton.
Nate Janson was 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Lakers.
Paul and Peter Herman each scored twice as well for Lastrup.
It was not Royalton’s only action, as the Riverdogs lost a 9-3 contest to Buckman, Sunday, June 18.
Jeremy Monson was big for the Billygoats, earning the win on the mound with seven innings pitched, three runs on six hits.
Offensively for Buckman, Joe Kahl went 3-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs.
Ryan Snyder led the Riverdogs with two hits and an RBI.
Lastly, Cuyuna edged the Pierz Bulldogs 6-5, Saturday, June 17.
Nick Herold allowed three runs in 6.1 innings pitched and had two RBIs.
Cuyuna followed that with a 15-5 win in seven innings over St. Mathias, Sunday, June 18.
Cody Meyer had two doubles in the loss.
