Richard 'Fred' Lentz

Richard “Fred” Lentz, 64-year-old resident of Onamia, passed away Monday, June 26, 2017, at the Mille Lacs Health System in Onamia.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 3, 2017 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Onamia. Interment will be held at 3 p.m. in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Swanville. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, 2017 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Onamia, and 1 hour prior to service on Monday.
Richard “Fred” Lentz was born, Jan. 16, 1953, in Little Falls, to Fred and Eunice (Johnson) Lentz. He graduated from Swanville High School in 1971 and attended Detroit Lakes Technical College for auto mechanics. Fred worked alongside his dad at Lentz Auto until 1978. He was also operating Rich’s Transmission at this time as well. Fred was well known throughout his mechanical career as the best transmission mechanic in the area. Fred was united in marriage to Marilyn (Mary) Heroux, June 15, 1974, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls. They had two children, Michelle and Jason. Fred died at Mille Lacs Heath System, June 26, 2017, after a short battle with cancer surrounded by his loving family.
He worked at LaVigne’s Garage in Foley, from February 1978 To July 1985 at which time Fred purchased H and L Oil, with his brother- in-law, who he later bought out. Fred and Mary operated the business for 17 years together. He then worked for Merit Enterprise until his retirement in 2008.
Fred loved spending time with his family, especially with his six grandchildren. He enjoyed riding his John Deere lawn mower doing custom lawn work. He believed in the value of hard work and the importance of helping others. Even in his hardest struggles Fred was able to maintain his sense of humor.
Richard “Fred” Lentz is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Mary of Onamia; daughter, Michelle (Duane) Kimman of Rice; son, Jason (Jill) Lentz of Foley; grandchildren, Allen and Laura Lentz, Rebekah, Kaitlyn, Kristen and Benjamin Kimman; parents, Fred and Eunice Lentz of Little Falls; brother, Ken (Leann) Lentz of Oronoco; sister, Jean (John) Schulte of Burtrum; brothers-in-law, Wayne Skinner of Oseola, Wis., and George (Cordy) Heroux of Motley; sisters-in-law, Joyce Olson of Little Falls and Shirley (Joseph) Gessell of Swanville; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Elaine Skinner; brother-in-law, Robert Heroux; mother and father-in-law, Louis and Gladys Heroux; and grandparents, Fred and Lydia Lentz and Iver and Gertie Johnson.
