A 5-3 victory over West Salem, Wisc. this afternoon earned the Pierz Legion baseball team a Division II Central Region Championship.
It was Pierz’ second victory over West Salem, whom they beat in the teams’ first pool play game. Pierz led 1-0 after a Matt Tautges RBI double in the bottom of the second. West Salem tied the game in the top of the third.
It did not take long for Pierz to respond, as in the bottom of the third Pierz scored four times with two outs in the inning to take a 5-1 lead.
Despite allowing a couple more runs, Pierz held on to earn the region championship.
Matt Tautges was named the Tournament MVP and was also on the All-Tournament team along with teammate Noah Boser.
Pierz made it to the Title game after beating Las Vegas, Nev., 5-0 last night. Matt Tautges pitched a complete game, and had a no-hitter entering the seventh. Back-to-back hits by Las Vegas in the top of the seventh ended that run, but Pierz still shut them out.
Pierz went 1-1 in pool play games, Saturday. In the first game, Pierz rolled to an 8-0 shut out of Park River, N.D.
Preston Rocheleau, Reese Kapsner and Peter Schommer combined to allow just three hits.
Pierz had already clinched the No. 1 seed out of its pool after winning the first two games, so some other players got some playing time in a 12-3 loss to Marysville, Kan. in Pierz’ third pool play game.
