Disappointed in vote on sales tax

To the Editor:

A note sent to Commissioner Mike Wilson: I wanted to send you a quick note to let you know that I am very disappointed in your vote to add a sales tax to the county. I believe it is unnecessary and there are alternative means to accomplish the county’s goals. Just because the state encourages you to incorporate these taxes, doesn’t mean you should. I believe it is just another way to gouge the residents of this county.

I am a middle class working citizen and I know it will not have a huge effect on my spending. However, there are a lot of people who will be affected by this tax, people that need to budget every dollar. I feel the same regarding your wheelage tax, which is another tax for roads. You are directly hurting the taxpayers in this county who can least afford these additional expenses.

You can be assured that I will not be voting for you when you come up for re-election.

By eliminating the gas tax which was acually a user fee was a dedicated revenue stream for roads and bridges. So forcing municipalities to increase a sales tax especially hurts lower income folks. So because retail is 75% of our economy lawmakers are shooting themselves and everyone else in the foot.
