Pierz opened its football season the way one would expect a team that reached the Class 3A state semifinals a year ago.
That is, with a 69-0 steam rolling of the Milaca Wolves, which is what happened in the Pioneers’ season and home opener, Aug. 31.
“We executed well on offense tonight and controlled the line of scrimmage,” said Pierz head coach Leo Pohlkamp.
Pierz scored first with a 13-yard Luke Girtz run, and never looked back.
Less than two minutes later, senior quarterback Preston Rocheleau hit fellow senior Ben Herold deep for a 57-yard pitch and catch to put Pierz up 14-0 after a Jalen Jansen two point conversion.
Jansen then scampered in from five yards out later in the first to put Pierz up 21-0.
Senior fullback Alex Funk plunged in from a yard out to make it 28-0, 1:13 before the quarter expired.
The Pioneers scored twice more before the half, as Reese Kapsner ran in from 11 yards out and Funk scored for the second time on a 13-yard run.
With a 41-0 lead at halftime, the backups got plenty of play in the second half.
“Everybody played tonight, which is nice,” Pohlkamp said. “Plus we had nine different backs carry the football for positive yards, which shows we have a lot of capable depth at that key position.”
Before that happened, Funk made it a trifecta of scores as he broke a 32-yard run with 6:41 left in the third.
Sophomore Matthias Algarin came in and scored twice, first on a spectacular 42-yard punt return, and then on a 52-yard rush.
Isaac Otte capped off the scoring late in the fourth.
Rocheleau was 4-for-6 on extra points, and Preston Veith was 1-for-1.
Alex Barclay ran in a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter.
Pierz out-gained Milaca 412-54, including 307-65 on the ground.
Funk led the rushers with eight carries for 69 yards. Jansen had seven for 50 and Girtz had six for 55. Herold finished with three grabs for 86 yards.
Defensively, senior Al Lochner had 2.5 sacks.
Pierz hosted Holdingford, Friday, but results were not available by press time. The Pioneers will travel to Maple Lake, Friday.
Olson leads Huskers to win
Senior Griffin Olson exploded for 210 yards and four scores on 15 carries in a 34-6 Holdingford win over Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta, Sept. 1.
Senior quarterback Evan DeMorett went 8-of-12 for 96 yards, including a 19-yard score to Olson.
Senior Adam Ripplinger caught four passes for 56 yards.
The Huskers will travel to play 2016 Class AA state runner-up Eden Valley-Watkins, Friday.
