Pierz starts playoffs with three champs

Pierz’ tennis team came away from the Granite Ridge Conference Tournament with three championships.

First, freshman Valerie Gall earned a championship victory with a 10-6 tiebreaker at No. 4 singles.

The duo of senior Avy Lease and junior Anessa Leidenfrost also won a title with a 10-7 tiebreaker victory at No. 2 doubles.

The No. 3 doubles team of senior Gracie Gall and junior Laura Skiba also earned a championship victory. Pierz won 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets.

Pierz’ next highest finisher was the No. 1 doubles team of senior Brittney Boser and junior Becky Langer, who were runners-up after falling 7-3 in a championship tiebreaker.

Junior Kalyn Gritzmacher took fourth at No. 1 singles, and sophomore Abby Andrea was fourth at No. 2 singles.

Little Falls’ top finisher was sophomore Sadie Sue Houdek who won the consolation match for fifth place at No. 2 singles.

Both teams also had duals, Sept. 28.

Pierz won its dual with Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Upsala Swanville Area, 6-1.

All three doubles teams won, including Boser and Katelyn Smude at No. 1 doubles (6-3, 6-3).

Both Andrea (No. 3 singles) and Valerie Gall (No. 4 singles) won 6-0, 6-0 for Pierz.

Ally Ecker took home the lone win for LPGE/USA at No. 1 singles over Langer.

Little Falls fell 1-6 to Staples Motley in a home match, Sept. 28.

Houdek was the lone Flyers victor at No. 2 singles. She won 6-1, 6-2.

Sophomore Mikayla Geise fought tough, but lost in three sets at No. 4  singles.

Pierz is scheduled to host No. 3 Pequot Lakes in the sub-section semifinals, Monday. The individual sub-section meet begins in Pierz, Thursday.

Section finals will be at Virginia.

Little Falls is scheduled to participate in the individual section tournament, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13-14.
